My cultural week

Listening to Funeral by Arcade Fire. The power of association took me back to this 2004 gem, because it includes a lament for ‘Haiti, mon pays’

Reading a potted history of Haiti in the Guardian. It could be subtitled ‘How to make a complete mess of a country in only 350 years’ And yes, among the slave traders and the corrupt dictators is our old friend environmental destruction. The deforestation in Haiti is so bad (98%) that the effects of floods, hurricanes etc are severely exacerbated. We have our own cycles of deprivation here, but they seem like NOTHING compared to what the Haitians are going through.

Watching Dan Snow (Mmm) on the development of British Sea Power. Made me reflect on how often the biggest of historical developments depend on the smallest of chances…what if Sam Pepys had decided he liked the country air, and never worked for the Navy Board? The whole of modern European history might have been different. Espannia rules the waves? I’m not saying it would have been worse, mind you, only different!

How cold is my valley?

Who I am

This blog started during the months before the 2010 General Election, in which I was the Green candidate for Calder Valley. It's morphed into an account of green activism...and other meanderings.
